DVD?

This rellay is a great film, not least because of aother wonderful Robert Donat performance. I'm hoping very much that will receive the DVD treatment that it deserves.

Unfortunately we're still waiting three years on. :(

This was SO MUCH BETTER than the remake, even though I like Jeremy Northam, Robert Donat's performance was exquisite. And so was Sir Cedric Hardwicke's as the father, an outstanding performance.

Why can't the Brits get more of their classic films on DVD???

Yay! The UK DVD is out on April 6th. I hope it'll be worth the 4 year wait!

I have just purchased the DVD from Moviemail and watched the film last night.
What a delight! The acting was of the highest order and shows why in the 40s-60s British cinema was in its heyday.

I agree that this is a brilliant film and worth watching, and I loved the performances, especially Cedric Hardwicke and Robert Donat. Even the servant was amazing.

But David Mamet made a completely different kind of film, much less of a courtroom drama and more of a subtle romance. Despite Rebecca Pidgeon's exceedingly understated acting style, I spotted more chemistry between Jeremy Northam and her than between Margaret Leighton and Robert Donat.

And David Mamet's film is very well crafted, even small things are charged with meaning. If you compare the beginning of the 1948 film and the beginning of Mamet's version (Kate's engagement), you can see that Mamet's focus is a different one.

It would be a tough call for me to say which one is the better film, I like them both very much.
