Never seen the movie, but is it based on "The Kreutzer Sonata" by Leo Tolstoy? I don't know how serious this movie comes off, but the similarities are striking...

"Unfaithfully Yours" is a riot. Can't say much about Tolstoy's sense of humour, but the Preston Sturges movie is about as funny as a movie can get.

One of my smart students noticed many similarities to Othello.

I would tend to believe that, though both Tolstoy and Shakespeare were inspirations, it is based on neither. I noticed those similarities to othello, too though.
