if they did a remake......

My choice would be........

Sir Alfred De Carter: Liev Schreiber
Daphne De Carter: Kate Beckinsale
Anthony "Tony": Christian Bale

I don't think Schreiber's old enough. Here's my version:

Sir Alfred: Bill Nighy
Daphne: Cate Blanchett
Tony: Jonathan Rhys-Myers

I would love to have seen Peter O'Toole as Sir Alfred some years ago, but I'm afraid he's a bit *too* old now...

ChoirBoyOC: Well done, you! You should be a casting director! Bill Nighy is a treasure! And you're right; O'Toole would have been wonderful! He was still young enough when they made the Dudley Moore abomination!

Although, do you think maybe Kate Blanchett projects a little too much intelligence and sophistication? Not that Daphne was dumb; she was just an uncomplicated, very all-American girl (who we can infer had nothing more than a middle-class background) who happened to marry a nobleman who was also a classical conductor. Maybe if Kate Hudson were ten years older...

Rudy Vallee would be hard to replace, though. Any ideas? That ability to be pompous and a boob at the same time is hard to pull off. His (August's) relationship with Barbara is beautifully encapsulated in their brief exchange in the box at the concert hall:

August: Give me the simple viewpoint!
Barbara: You've got it, boy! You don't have to yearn for it.

Poe! You are...avenged!

I would go with Natasha Kinski in the Linda Darnell part, definitely. Not sure who could play the Rex Harrison part. It is a shame Dudley Moore passed away. He would have been perfect.

never thought of bill, but that would be very interesting lol

They did do a remake in 1984 with Dudley Moore and Nastassja Kinski and it is a poor imitation of the original

reply

Gosh, that is an incredible co-incidence!

reply

Oh my dear britmovielover, the saracasm seems to have escaped you completely...

I think this remake was hysterically funny as well..it lacked that certain sophistication that the original had..(Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell...c'mon!!) But the updated version was undeniably funny, and riotous in parts. I love the whole concept of this movie, and both versions send me into hysteria no matter how many times I view them! :)

reply

hi, i also enjoyed both versions

one reason i like 1984 is Tchaikovsky violin concerto;
also the violin duel is hysterical. XD
