water thrown in kid's face

hadn't seen this movie in at least 35 maybe even 40 years
was looking forward to watching it again
'fred c dobbs' such a memorable character ...

but early on when bogie threw water in that young boy's face
i lost all interest in watching

i'd forgotten that scene and maybe i'm getting soft in my old age
but i just didn't want to see any more of the guy

i had two other dvds sitting around - sand pebbles and spinal tap -
and said good riddance to fred c. dobbs

It's a dark movie about the corruption of men when it comes to the possibility of financial gain. The young boy that gets splashed is no different.

Even in the face of such scrutiny he continues to "dollar drop" the available options for his lottery tickets. To show that "anything" is what he needs. In short, he is just doing his job. Even after the boy is splashed in the face with water he continues his pitch as if he was unaffected. Perhaps out of guilt Fred C. Dobbs finally gives in and pays for one. In the end, the kid proved the stronger.

Also, it is due to this child that the winning lottery ticket that Dobbs buys gives our "heroes" the ability to set out on their journey.

@ noobzilla:
I watched the movie as a kid maybe 10-11, okay?

I didn't have the keen - rarefied - cinematic insight you obviously do.
Probably still don't, but if possessing that means coming up with douchebag comments like
the one you made in response to mine - good, I'll pass anyway.

reply

The kid was Robert Blake if it makes you feel any better.

reply

ha
yeah knew it was baretta
still inexcusable a grown man doing that to a kid - or anybody really

come to think tho
maybe bogie had esp and was prepaying tyke blake for future
behavior
i mean i always thought bogie was el cool dude numero uno
and knew everything there was to know - that is before the h2o
incident

reply

They were all rough and tumble people in that film.

Booze, whores, greed, murders...so whats a bit of agua? ;)

reply

LMAOOOO! Bogart king of cool?? Better not watch Bogie in "In A Lonely Place"!!

reply

Well I must "touche" your comment @ stanleybix-1.
Yeah my Bogie mancrush took a right cross right on the button in that flick, for sure.
I will maintain tho, goddam! he put on an acting clinic in it.

"i mean i always thought bogie was el cool dude numero uno and knew everything there was to know - that is before the h2o incident"

You do realize, of course, that it was fiction. Fred C. Dobbs threw water at the kid, not Humphrey Bogart.

reply

Really? Dang, I thought there was something familiar about that kid. And as much as I despise Robert Blake (adult anyway), I still felt bad for the kid. Bogart's character was just a huge douche in general, absolutely no redeeming qualities. If not for the other characters, I would've probably stopped watching altogether.

reply

Wait, so that kid is the mistery man from Lost Highway?

reply

FFS! what's wrong with throwing water in the kids face ... the kid was a damn nuisance and Dobbs told him loads of times to get lost, but the kid carried on begging for some dough. I would have liked to have seen Dobbs slap him hard in the face for the way the little sod disturbed his quiet drinking session.

reply

1. im more worried about wasted water in desert town than the kids face.
2. the kid was warned, multiple times, but he kept being annoying and insistent. he was flat out told he will get water thrown into face if he dont go away. he didnt. Dobbs concluded his end of a promise.
3. He used the same method i used to get rid of trick or treaters, so i cant blame him too much.

reply

Are you kidding me? That kid grew up to be Robert Blake-who was acquitted of murder

reply

A lot worse things than water should be thrown into adult Robert Blake's face...

Anyway, as far as we know kid Robert Blake hadn't committed any murders (unless he was into shooting puppies or something), so I don't really hold it against the kid at that stage.

reply

And just maybe this act of demeaning a poor helpless child turned Blake into the murderous sob he became !!

No, I am NOT serious...just bewildered as to how this can even be a topic worthy of conversation. Yeah it was a pretty crumby thing for a grown man to do to a kid. But it a damn movie - an angry adult male didn't do this to a kid !! And I have to figure they explained the part to the kid, told him what to expect etc and that Bogart gave him a little extra attention to insure the kid didn't feel 'picked on'. Just a guess but I've read that Bogart was a softy. Besides, it was probably hotter than hell and the kid enjoyed the refreshing splash. At least he knew it was coming ...
I can only imagine your reaction to 'The Wizard of Oz' ... cry when the mean witch threw a fire ball at the poor helpless scarecrow ???

see my reply Ironman Re: That poor Gila Monster. This is the same type of thread.
