What makes this movie so great! (SPOILERS)
Spoiler Alert, Don't Read any Further if you haven't seen this movie yet.
The Reason this movie is so great is because of the message the movie is trying to tell you. Lots people say the message is just about greed. Although i think this maybe part of the message i believe there is a bigger message to be found here.
The most Important scene in the movie is when Howard, Curtin and Dobbs are sitting my the fire after finally finding gold and are talking about what they are going to do with the gold when they come back.
Howard, is thinking of opening small store for himself, maybe grocery's or something else to please the local people.
Curtin, always wanted to have is own fruit farm, and tells a really nice story about a peach fruit farm he used to work on.
Dobbs, on the other hand does not have a plan, all he wants is to spend lots of gold on stuff he doesn't need and just wants to live the rich life.
You then see the men discussion a limit of how much gold is enough for each so they won't keep digging for gold for years. Howard and Curtin settle on a reasonable amount of $25,000 which is more then enough for them to settle down.
Dobbs again does not share there thoughts and want's to keep going to $50,000 $75,000 hell even $100,000 isn't enough for them.
Then we come to the end of the movie and this is where the message is completed.
Dobbs, who had no plans and was only obsessed with all the gold he could get. He ended up alone and killed by bandits.
Curtin and Howard end up back in town only to find themselves without any gold, wich was stolen and thrown away by bandits. And finally lost forever by the storm. The men then have a big laugh about it all being a giant joke played on them. Though they did get richer out of it after all
Curtin, learned of a Fruit farm in a letter from Cody, he decided he would travel there and go look for work and happiness.
Howard, By helping the local villagers with the young boy, he found a place where he could settle down as a Medicine man, Respected and worshiped by hundreds of villagers.
Eventually it was not the gold that made there dreams come true, it was the experience of the whole thing that led them to it.
e.g.
Money is not important in life, it's life itself. What's important is how you live you're life. It's about the experience and what you take from it.
