Funny that I found this thread, after just noticing it myself upon seeing the film on Feb.3/2013 on TCM. I also thought he broke the fourth wall, albeit very briefly. It was his film, so I imagine he could have gotten away with it, yet I never ever noticed this before; and this is one of my favorite films of all time, for decades now.
shareI'd never noticed it either over the years until I saw it last month. It was actually his son's film if you're talking about the director. Usually, they break the fourth wall in comedies but perhaps this section of the film is the most lighthearted and son wanted to give father a moment to pull the audience in. Who knows. Can you think of any other drama in which this is done except in cases in which an actor addresses the audience on a regular basis? Do you have a favorite instance of breaking the fourth wall?
shareThe most obvious answer is Nights Of Cabiria where the director Fellini has the actress Gulietta Massina to look directly into the camera and smile. It also happens to be part of the very best ending in all of cinema history.

shareAs far as contemporary movies go, I've always liked Eddie Murphy's camera gaze in "Trading Places". When the Dukes are showing him bacon and they say something like "what you might find in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich". Eddie looks at the camera as if to say "Can you believe these two idiots?".

In QUANTUM OF SOLACE we get what looks (to me) to be the only example of James Bond doing this, not counting the silly ending to NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. After Bond (Daniel Craig) leaves Greene's party, the police pull him over and insist he open his trunk. Bond gets out of the car, glances right at us, and asks something to the effect of: "Now why would they want me to do that?"

How about this one... when Dobbs shoots Curtin at night and next day trys to find him and screams and shots "Curtin... Curtin...Curtin.. where are you, Curtin" and he trips.. do you see on the left hand side, some ropes, a big projector/ Generator/ Big black box with stand... haha it clearly Editing is not dont so well, its a set, we can see it :))))
