While it didn't sound shrill to me ...
... I would not be surprised at the dubbing at all. There are plenty of times when the sounds didn't match up well with what I saw.
Two scenes where I thought there were obvious added sounds:
o The fight in the garden, in which D'Artagnon was making goofy sounds while taking poses to make his attacker more angry.
o The spot in which D'Artagnon protests to the other Three that he was only making love to De Winter's main Kitty so he could find out where Constance was imprisoned -- it was Aramis or Portis that passed his handkerchief over his mouth while we heard "delicious, delicious".
Also, many of the stories I heard of Gene Kelly were of him spending lots of time, late in the day and at night, dubbing sounds for tap dancing sequences and such.
