Van Heflin as Athos...

Really raised this movie from a swashbuckling, "Illustrated Classics" item to a deeply human drama.
His reminiscences of the tragedy of his marriage were examples of terrific acting.
His performance was worthy of a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

I always love to watch anything he's in because of what he brings to the character. While definitely not classically handsome, he was still one of the most attractive actors of his era. I hunted all over to find a copy of Green Dolphin Street just to see again his final scene with Lana Turner.

I agree. Heflin is the best thing in this picture. His acting stands up all these years later, but not so much the other ones.

One of his best performances.
