Kirk Alyn and the Superman T.V. Show

I was interested. My father and I just got done watching the first half of the Superman serial and I popped up the question "Why didn't Alyn play Superman on the TV show?". My father couldn't answer and it has been bugging me for the last hour. Does anyone know the answer?

Yeh Alyn turned it down cause he couldn't walk around as is without people saying hey its superman. He went on to be in another superhero serial called Blackhawk. hes also in the first Christopher Reeve movie as Lois Lanes dad.

reply

Hey , thanks for clearing that up for me. I did see him in the first Superman movie but it was the uncut version. He scolds Lois in the train if I remember.

reply

Yeh its a shame I liked him better then George Reeves.

reply

They were both good but I liked the way he played Clark Kent better. Also, I thought it was pretty original when Kirk Alan would turn into a cartoon and start flying. It looked better to me then having George lying on a table, but for the time people liked that.

reply

i think george reeves gave clark kent some backbone. george reeves is completly believable as superman/clark kent.

Actually, the reason that Alyn never took the role as Superman in the TV series was that "they were only offering a couple of hundred dollars a week for about 16 weeks a year." If the producers of "TAOS" had managed to scrape up a few more dollars, Alyn might have reconsidered. Reeves got very little when the show started. When it became a hit he negotiated a much better salary, but peanuts compared to what todays TV stars get

He NEVER laid on a table; what a silly git!

reply

It looks like he was a laying on something similar. If it wasn't a table then what was it? People have been joking about that for years.

Hey Cyst, you've oviously never watched or read any of the many mentions of FX for this show. Perhaps it would be enlightening to do so.

reply

Instead of being rude about it you could enlighten me on the question I asked you.
By the way, I said it was something that was joked about for many years, you don't have to get nasty with me about it.

I've only seen the first movie serial and the Superman and the Molemen feature and I can already tell (unless the sequel and the tv show contain much different portrayals) that I prefer Reeves. Alyn has terrible form as Superman, he runs around with his arms swinging loosley. He makes Superman look like so graceless.

Otherwise, it was a damn fun serial.

Reeves has command and poise as Supes. I think we can all be thankful that Alyn turned down the tv show.

He does look kind of silly as Superman with his form and what not. But, I did like him as Clark Kent.

I can tolerate Alyn's Kent, but his Superman gave me the creeps with all those weird fascial expressions. Noel Neil was much more likeable on TV show, here she was just way too competitive with Clark. I was also suprised how many of the Spider Lady's henchmen Superman 'allowed' to die.

reply

I do agree with you about Noel Neil. She was better on the TV show. I was glad to see her in Superman Returns, even if it was just a very small role.

I liked her competetive spirit in this serial. She was quite spunky and attractive, not wry or sardonic as Lois tends to be in later incarnations (Superman TAS, Superman Returns, Smallville).

I didn't notice her in SR, when does she appear?

She has a very small role. She is the woman that Lex Luther had married and was dying near the beginning of the movie.

O.O, thanks!
