The ending was a little murky for me. . .. I got the impression in his final speech that he was not going to run for president after all. But then he seemed to want to join in the campaigning. ????? So what did he do? Run for president or what???

No, he wasn't going to run. He was going to attend the conventions of both parties and try to influence the nominations. You have to remember that primaries weren't so important at the time and the conventions were.
