Half an Hour Into It . . .

Hepburn finally makes her appearance.

This is one of the two Tracy & Hepburn films I have yet to see (THE SEA OF GRASS is the other), and, half an hour into it, I can't say I like it very much. I wonder how Hepburn would have fared in the Lansbury role, which was - at least at this point - bigger. For obvious reasons, however, she would have shied away from such a role, even if it had been available. Maybe the Tracy & Hepburn magic will prevail and carry the film off - I hope so, but I'm not quite optimistic at this point. Like THE SEA OF GRASS, it doesn't seem to be one T&H's more popular films.

Even though this thread is old I'm responding.

According to the trivia section Katherine Hepburn wasn't cast in the movie originally. Claudette Colbert was cast as "Mary Mathews" but Frank Capra fired her days before filming was to start because she refused to work evenings. Spencer Tracy suggested he hire Katherine Hepburn, who had been helping Tracy rehearse his lines, since she already knew the part.

More trivia

Frank Capra wanted Clark Gable for Grant Mathews so he could reunite his Oscar winning leads from his Best Picture hit, 'It Happened One Night'.

I thought that considering the real life situation it was an odd film choice for them regardless of which role Hepburn played.
