Notice the great creativity in the opening
theme, which dramatizes in music the dialing of a telephone and then the busy-signal, which establishes itself, then slows and gradually fades away as the orchestra swells in the portentous minor-key main theme. Great music from Franz Waxman! (It was recently released on CD.)
Yes, I saw the movie and the opening theme struck me distinctively! I loved the music.
I have to correct myself on the recent soundtrack CD (which is actually a re-recording); it only uses a snippet (maybe five bars?) from the opening theme, and then goes directly to the "Passacaglia" from the final five minutes, the film's climax. Still great, but I wish the full opening theme was on that CD. See the film, everybody!
