Hag Line???

Don't tell me people (probably mostly women) lined up, in a cordened off area, waited to be asked to dance and this was called a Hag Line? Does anyone remember these or know how common they were? In the movie, Barbara Stanwyck is standing at the front of the line waiting for Burt Lancaster and then she cuts in on Ann Richards and says something about the hag line. I thought my middle school and high school dances were pretty dreadful, but appearently I was wrong.
