ok, i hope your post was a serious post. i had trouble paying attention to the movie and didn't even hear all the dialogue with the kids around, but i suppose you had an even more difficult time watching the movie...?
Burt wants to kill Barb to pay Morano. I believe Marano was blackmailing him. The three (Burt, Morano & Evans) were working together until they got rid of Morano and only Burt & Evans remained partners. Morano somehow found out and blackmailed the two. Wanted $200K (or was it $M? I think it was $K only) and said that's how much Barb has in life insurance. Which is the motive to kill her.
Sally was NOT in on it. Sally overheard some info from her husband who works for the local prosecution office and she was concerned for Burt so she was only doing her own investigation. She did not know enough.
The conversation was NOT made to be heard by Leona on purpose. She was trying to contact her husband at the office. I believe what happened was that they connected her to the line, but there were already 2 ppl on the line so she didn't get through, instead she was able to hear what they said.
The killer said this to burt b/c apparently he didn't know it's burt. that's my guess.
Oh, I almost forgot the answer to most important question. Burt changed his mind at the last minute because Barb told him that Morano has been caught by the police so they don't have to pay him the $200K (Barb's life insurance proceeds) anymore. This info was given to her by Evans.
