Is Tommy Dorsey a square?

I thought the music in this film was just great and it all holds up after so many years but I thought Tommy Dorsey was pretty bad. I think he was trying to be super smooth (or something)and it just sounded like a dirge. He has a famous name but was he famous because of his brother or on his own? I take it all back if someone loves him.

While Tommy Dorsey was far from being a good actor, he was even farther from being a square. Big band music was not homogeneous, but included several different styles, including jazz, swing, and ballads. Some bands specialized in just one style, while others utilized multiple styles. Also, once Tommy Dorsey got into the business, he certainly didn't ride brother Jimmy's coat tails. According to a Wikipedia article, the Tommy Dorsey Band had seventeen No. 1 records, and the Jimmy Dorsey Band had eleven. I recommend that you listen to "Marie", "Song of India", and "I'll Never Smile Again" (Frank Sinatra vocal) to discover more of Tommy Dorsey's big band sound.
