Great Zinnemann movie, I enjoyed watching it 3 times now.

I watched several other movies like "The Big Lift", "The Devil makes three", "A Foreign Affair", "I was a male War Bride", "The Prize of Gold" and "Hallo Fraeulein" (with Peter Van Eyck) and would be glad if somebody could recommend more movies on this topic.

I don't know what you exactly mean by "this topic", but if your interest extends to post-World War II Austria, Four in a jeep (1951, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044192/) could be worth checking out.
It is set in Vienna, when it was divided into American, British, French and Soviet sectors, plus one international sector jointly administered by all four occupying powers. The plot revolves around an Austrian woman whose husband is kept as a prisoner of war by the Soviet army, and an American soldier who is trying to help her.
The film was made by Praesens Film, the same Swiss company that produced The Search, although it stands a few notches below the latter in terms of quality and execution and is more of a historical curiosity than a true classic. There is also not as much location shooting as that found in The Search and The Big Lift.
Unfortunately, the only print I know of, the VCI Entertainment DVD (Region 0, NTSC), although advertised as restored, is in pitiful shape and the audio track, which is muffled and suffers from occasional drop-outs, makes dialogue difficult to follow at times. The DVD beaver review (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/dvd_reviews52/four_in_a_jeep.htm) does a good job of presenting the various shortcomings of this particular release. Still, a poor print is better than no print at all.

Although it is a very different kind of film, The Third Man is set in post-war Austria, and touches on the issues caused by the mix of nationalities in the city, and the fate of children.

And, while I've got Orson Welles on my mind, The Stranger also addresses post-war issues and Americans coming to understand what happened in the concentration camps. It is set in the US, though.

Hi practicepiano,

I love "The Third Man" and also enjoyed watching "The Stranger" several times.
On TCM I watch every old WW II drama, no matter if it takes place in the US, Europe or in the Pacific.

Way back then movies were simply much better even without trick photography: less blood, much less violence, no F-word in every other sentence, no actors who jump up 12 ft. into the air and most of all there was much more suspense.
I wish the young movie directors nowadays could learn from it.

There are several movies located in NYC where they fight Nazis, for instance "Nazi Agent" (1942) with Conrad Veidt and "Secret Enemies" (also from 1942).

More tips, please! I'm very interested in these WW II movies.

Thanks,

Chrissie
