The anal sphincter also relaxes, releasing all waste material. It would've added additional sophistication to an already sophisticated film if we saw all the characters reacting to the fecal stench.

That's one thing that Hitchcock overlooked - that the body would have started to smell.
I think it would have been better if Hitchcock didn't show the murder being committed at all. The film should have started with the murderers closing the trunk (the body already in there).

That's what the screenwriter Arthur Laurents thought, too. Have the audience wonder if the body is really in there.
shareI don't think it would have been necessary for viewers to wonder if the body is really in there. The viewers could assume that the body is in there, but the murder itself wouldn't have been seen. Hitchcock could have shown the guys taking off their gloves, and the scene with the rope sticking out could still have been shown (ie, it's obvious that the victim was strangled and put in there).

I have an even better idea of how Hitch could have handled the opening scene without showing the murder taking place. We hear the victim scream. Then the camera slowly moves into the room. The body has been placed into the trunk, but an arm is still sticking out and the killers move the arm into the trunk (the viewers get to see this). That would have been much creepier than seeing the murder take place. Oh well, a long-lost opportunity!

The entire film is built on the tension generated by the knowledge that there's a body in the trunk. Replacing this knowledge with uncertainty would shift the focus elsewhere, needlessly diverting the suspense down a less potent avenue.
