There is a scene in which they show his name in print: Jefferson T. something-or-other (Jeff T. = Jeffty).

Though it hadn't occurred to me until I read these posts, I suspect the name Jefty may have been invented (and then justified by the "Jefferson T.") because it has a strange, vaguely sinister sound, a little boy sounding nickname still used for a wierd, malicious-child-minded man. Note the other three principle characters had very ordinary, harmless names -- Pete, Lily, Susie.
