What was wrong with the girl who seemed like she was sick that they eventually carted off after her 'episode' in the fields during the rain? Was she crazy? Pregnant? Couldnt handle the strain of the work? It was never really made clear.

She was pregnant. She had morning sickness earlier in the film. One of the other women hinted at this when she said that a woman doesn't just get sick from eating bad rice.
