Why???

Have I never seen this until now?!? As a major Gene Kelly fan, I'm just ashamed that I never took the time to watch this before. At the beginning, I had doubts about it, but I LOVED IT so much!

I love the over-the-top, lavish spectacle of it all! Gene Kelly and Judy Garland were so great together onscreen, and they were both SO funny in this! I was cracking up when Judy was throwing all the knicknacks at him! There were some great one liners, especially the quip when they first meet by the water and Gene says, "Don't you believe in love?" to which Judy replies, "No, haven't I told you I'm getting married?" Classic!

I have to gush about how freakin' sexy Gene was in this! Swoon! Even with the horrible wig, moustache and cheesy costumes, he was HOT! I've always been fascinated with him and thought he was very handsome, but I've never found him overtly sexy until now. Of course, his legs in the ballet scene were unbelievable but what really got me was the scene where he hypnotized Judy and was wearing that costume that showed his arm with the gold armband! I was mesmerized by that perfect arm muscle.

And I think he did some of his best dancing ever in this film. As opposed to the tap, this was so much more athletic yet graceful. The pirate ballet scene just looked exhausting, and I really loved the "Nina" dancing where he just seemed to float as he climbed up the buildings, around the balconies, etc.

I just love this movie!!

I agree, I thought I wouldnt like it because of Gene acting with an accent but once you start watching you get hooked.

Yeah, it was all about that first shot of his arm with the armband. I've always thought Gene Kelly to be something of a fifties stamp-out of a perfect man. I'd always seen him as beautiful and graceful, but also fully wholesome and conforming to old Hollywood code. I wondered desperately about what was under that shirt. I knew by the way he moved, and by his fantastic ass and perfect form that he must be a pretty sensual individual. I think that's why it really got me unlike any arm before. It was like, holy crap, I always knew logically that had to be there, but oh to finally see it! And how fantastic it was--better than I could have imagined.

Shows you the value of holding back a little at first.

I agree! I love this movie. Very under-rated! I think Gene and Judy both deserved acting awards for that year. AMAZingly splendid! I also think Minnelli's direction deserves to be regarded in the same praising way that people regard the work of Powell and Pressburger who made "The Red Shoes" and other wonderful movies. "The Pirate" holds its own among the best.

I've search high and low for an on-line picture of Gene shirtless...but..he must not have wanted to have pictures taken like that. I can only imagine what his physique was like.
