I'm not a woman, nor am I gay, so perhaps I'm not qualified; but by any objective standards, Ricardo Montalban had it all over Lawford.
Montalban is a far better dancer, much better physique, equally if not more handsome, and the character he played was a far better human being than the one played by Lawford.
Beyond that, Montalban was also a far better actor than Lawford.
Am I missing something here?

But Lawford must have had "something", judging by the beautiful, glamorous stars with whom he was rumored to be romantically linked. I don't ever get his appeal, though.

i agree - RM was naturally suave and elegant in whatever part he played.
Apparently he had some sex appeal for teenage girls in the 1940s. He rivalled Frank Sinatra as a bobby-soxer matinee idol during the post-war period.
