Who played Jean Dexter the murdered girl?

Iam trying to look at the credits but cannot find the name of the actress who played Jean Dexter the murdered girl????

reply

I know, that's a shame. Even the corpses on Law and Order and CSI at least get their name listed in the credits on IMDb.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

A lot of this film is "spot the actor". Like Molly Picon who sells the detective the root beer. And James Gregory, probably best known as "Inspector Luger" from "Barney Miller".

reply

I can't understand why Molly Picon is not credited in this film. Does that mean she wasn't SAG at the time? She has a key scene in the film and is at the very least a day player.

reply

I recognized Mr. Gregory. Also the fella at the telephone connection lines was in Christmas Vacation.

reply

Wikipedia says that there is a rumor that it was shelley Winters. Looking at photos of dexter from the movie and photos of winters it seems possible.

reply

The photo also resembles Dolores Moran.

reply

Dolores Moran was an incredably beautiful woman. I don't think I spotted her in this movie.

reply

No way was it Shelley Winters. Shelley was never that pretty.

reply

In reply to fredcdobbsjr, I don't know if it was Shelly Winters, but she was that pretty in 1947 when The Naked City was filmed.

reply

Definitely not Shelley Winters. First you get to see an autopsy photo of the lower face. Even without seeing above the nose you can tell that isn't Shelley. Shelley had a proportionally squater and rounder face then the person shown.

Soon after there is a scene showing a NY newspaper with the victim's photo on the front page. Again, it's clearly not Shelley.

reply

I think it was a dummy, the hair looked like a bad wig too.

reply

Gregg Sherwood (who is listed as having uncredited role).

For the record, the actress who sells detective root beer and provides some info is uncredited Yiddish theater star Celia Adler (mistakenly identified as Molly Picon), and Adler is also misidentified as the dress store manager. Imdb credits on this one are something of a mess.

reply

No - Molly Picon was definitely in the movie. Anyone who knows Molly's work can tell it's her. THAT accent.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"
