Nice one - I like things out of the orderly. And here it is the narratio

6 days of genuine New York in the late 1940ies. That alone is fantastic. I don't mind if an apartment isn't the apartment of a Miss Dexter, though.
In parallel to the narration this is quite unique as far as I am aware. And very much worthwhile to watch.
6 days of genuine New York with a murder almost as an aside.

I'd be tempted to give a 10/10 were there not those silly scenes in the officers home, kissing his wife, and refusing to beat his son for going out unsupervised.

Oh, yeah, and the narration in the end getting more involved, telling Willy what to do and what not to do. That's too dense, too patronizing for my taste.

I'm looking forward to watch a second time.

May I suggest you watch the Criterion release of the DVD? Then, watch both the video essays as well as the movie w/accompanying commentary by Malvin Wald, the screenwriter of this film. There, you will get an explanation of these things you find unsatisfying and perhaps the reasoning behind their inclusion will enrich the experience for you.
