I liked Bill Cole's parting comment to the Blandings

"When I look around at what you two have got here, well, I don't know... Maybe there are some things you should buy with your heart, and not your head. Maybe those are the things that really count."

This is only true if you have the money and can afford to pay more for something than it's actually worth. People who don't have a lot of disposable income or who don't want to waste what they do have can't do that. They'll love everything they have and pretty soon go broke.

The thing people sometimes forget is nothing is guaranteed. We may be doing really well today but tomorrow is another day. This is what happened to a lot of people a few years back. They were living the dream buying bigger and better houses every few years and taking out equity then suddenly the housing market shifted. They may have loved their house but many found themselves underwater and unable to pay for their homes so sadly they ended up losing them.

The Blandings put a lot into that house and after all the headaches to build it they came to love it. What would have happened if Jim hadn't come up with a slogan and lost his job? There's no way they would have been able to stay in that house. They'd try to sell but, unless they found someone equally in love with their house, they'd have to sell quickly and at a loss. Following one's heart can be risky.

Actually, they could have sold the place for more than they paid for it, as the land in a nice area with a gorgeous modern house would be worth a lot more than the same plot with a tumbledown old ruin on it. I don't know if they could have sold it for more than they paid for the original house plus the costs of construction, but it's entirely possible. So they'd have had to live tight until Mr. Blandings got another job, but it wouldn't have been disastrous.

But as it was, the maid saved their asses and all was prosperously well. I hope they put her kids through college in the years to come, because a "Thank you" and a raise wasn't enough.
