Really good movie... well acted, amazing photography...

I loved the train scene where the couple said goodbye.

I agree 100%. What made that train scene heartbreaking was the knowledge that he had no intention of coming back to her. It was obvious to me and probably to other viewers, but she didn't clue in.

It's a very "French" film thanks to Ophuls despite being American-made and set in Vienna. The sets, pacing, camera shots, romanticism, tragedy, etc. more in line with a French movie than an American one which might have gone for one of those tacked on happy endings had a major US studio financed this rather than it being an independent production.

Having said that, it was a serious downer knocking off Lisa and BOTH Stefans! while studio Hollywood could make a true tragedy and ending and still satisfy at the conclusion, ie: Garbo's ANNA KARENINA. I did enjoy the film but do think it's been a bit overrated by some of the professional critics. Ophuls' 1950's films back in France are much more satisfying.

The DVD stopped near the end, therefore I ordered another movie. I liked the movie, although I also thought Lisa was an idiot to desire a guy who didn't know who she was. I wonder if the unwed pregnancy plot raised eyebrows in the late 40's.

some women love the bad guys and all the crap they create.

So true, the same hold true for men attracted to trouble making women. Go figure human nature!
