Unbelievable!

Guys, is this movie great or WHAT?!
I can't believe no one's talking about it!

reply

This is a great film. It just seems to suffer from the fact that Welles is mostly known for Citizen Kane and Hayworth is known for Gilda. I wish more people would discover this gem.

I have to agree, last night as I watched the film, I was mesmerized. I had thought at the time while watching that Mr. Welles might not have had total creative control, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

The acting was impeccable, especially Ms. Hayworth and Mr. Welles. The use of shadows, settings, closeups, and cut edits added immensely to the production value.

Now my question is this: could there be a possible director's cut in the future like they did for Touch of Evil?

reply

Unfortunately no. The excised footage was destroyed.

reply

The original cut was 155 minutes long and woefully yes, only the released footage still exists. There will never be a Director's Cut of this picture.

Great film no doubt but Orson's Irish accent was appalling!

At least I think it was meant to be Irish, his name was the only real clue! ;)

Pass the blarney Orson, Brad Pitt needs it for a bit!!

reply

I thought Orson's Irish accent was very very good; one of the best I have ever seen on film. He had lived for part of his youth in Ireland.

reply

I am really surprised about the criticism of Welles's Irish accent in this film. Welles lived in Ireland and his is definitely the best Irish accent I have heard by a non-hibernian in any fillum.

reply

I want to talk like him!

He is truly awesome - best accent I have yet heard - and his decision to include it was very smart, especially since he talks so much in the movie, even narrates.

People who do not like it are spoiled, probably just saw CK, and want to hear him talk like CFK again and again.

He had quite a voice, worked in radio for a while, everyone wanted him for voice acting.

Some smart, some don't.

reply

What was appalling about it? Keep in mind that Welles is playing an Irishman in the U.S.; many people lose a bit of their dialects when they're in other countries and are surrounded by people of other dialects for long periods of time. I know a variety of Irish people living in North America and found Welles' interpretation to be very compelling and believable.

One of the few..very few movies...that had me applauding...in my living room..after watching the Columbia DVD.

reply

it's comforting to know i'm not the only one who does this.

Glad to see other fans of this great movie. Its my second favorite (and barely, barely, behind Out of The Past) film noir.

Welles does suffer from a bad accent, but his acting otherwise is EXCELLENT.

How a hacked up film with a poor soundtrack could remain so timeless and excellent shows how brilliant Welles really is.

reply

The very song that was to be the highlight of the movie was its lowest point!

Some smart, some don't.

reply

People overlook this awesome movie because they hear the studio changed it, fear the goodness of it is not, but it is one of the best movies, rewatchable, not a waste of $.

It is especially inspirational, so I recommend it to any creative person, artist, writer, film-maker, yada.

I wish so much had not been cut out, bet it had to do with the girl, should read the script, because so little of her is in the film.

Some smart, some don't.

I checked this movie out from the library and watched it last night. I must say that I am disappointed. I thought the characters were very good, but I didn't care much for the movie overall. Please don't disregard me as an idiot because I did not like the film, the three other Welles picutures I've seen (Magnificent Ambersons, Touch of Evil, Citizen Kane) are all in my top 20. But I'm not sure I found what was great about this movie. I fell asleep a few times during, not because I was bored, but because I was tired. So I'm asking if someone would tell me what they like about it and why. I will hopefully give it another shot before it's due.

I found it to be great, really. It's unbeliavable that it runs for less than 1h30, because it has about everything... it's a journey, I loved it.

Big fan of welles here.

Yet, I think this movie, apart from nice conceits, is horrible! To make a comparison. This is like da Vinci painting sad-eyed puppies. The assinine plot cannot withtand all of Welles noodling, and Mannerist urges. Too much art, too much plot, not enough thought.

reply

I would definitely give it another try with coffee this time. :) The Lady from Shanghai, IMO, has the most magnificent scenery of all of the Welles films that I've seen; namely there are beautiful shots of downtown San Francisco from its hills, as well as what appears to be the Golden Gate Bridge. There's also some wonderful scenery of Mexico and some wonderful cinematography of the film's climactic scene in the amusement park, which, I'm sure you've taken in already.

The plot flows very smoothly and is simple to articulate and will certainly be so on your second viewing. An easy-to-digest plot is great for this film because, IMO, the characters are so compelling that you really just want to enjoy them. People have given Welles flack for his interpretation of an Irish dialect on this board but I found it to be quite accurate in comparison to several Irish North American dialects to which I've been accustomed.

I would also recommend The Stranger (1946), which is my second favourite Welles film after this one, which you'll enjoy if you like Welles' more subtle yet compelling characters of his 1940s era.
