Anyone know why Welles had an Irish accent in the film?

i tried to find a review of the original book "if i die before i wake", or a mention of the ethnicity of the character. no luck.
acc to one discussion, Welles' character in the book was named Laurence Planter.
the plot is SOOOO similar to the plot of "Fletch"...
