Was the actor who played Bannister (Sloane) partially paralyzed?

I found the way he walked in the courtroom scenes quite unusual..even with the canes and braces on his legs. Maybe that's how FDR walked when no one was looking. Anyway, I looked at Sloane's bio and saw nothing about him being paralyzed, or walking with canes, or braces. Were any of you readers struck by the courtroom scenes of him trying to walk in a normal fashion?

Though the reason for the braces wasn't mentioned, I'm guessing his character had been afflicted with polio.

He's been in many other movies with no limp.
