Tom's coin toss?

After Tom hears the light bulb pop and thinks he's been shot, at one point he winds up sinking slowly to the floor as he tosses a coin several times. Surely this is a joking reference to SOMETHING -- but what? Does anybody have any idea why a supposedly dying person would toss a coin? All I can think of is "heads I'm dead, tails I'm not." Anyone know?
