I thought Bette. . .

looked really lovely in this film. Her hair and make-up were wonderful and I thought she looked really beautiful. Her character got to show that a woman needed to be tough to succeed (not unlike Ms. Davis in real life)and her make-up and hair showed that she wanted to be soft and attractive in order to find love. I very much enjoyed her performance in this movie.

I may be crazy, but to me she looked like Joan Crawford several times throughout the movie.

And that was, somehow, a bad thing?

Or did you intend to mean this ironically?

Alleged feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford notwithstanding, I doubt few people, even the most ardent fans of Miss Davis, would ever have said Miss Crawford was a physically unattractive woman.

I thought she looked lovely as well. Despite what she thought (she told Johnny Carson she was ugly), she was a very attractive woman.

This was really a cute film.

She did look very good, and I can see the Crawford resemblance, particularly the hair.
YOu can see she is wearying very long eyelashes, though I think she didn't need them that long, just a bit thicker would have done the trick.

I am a huge Bette Davis fan and I thought she looked fine in this film BUT as a comedienne she was as charming as a cold, dead fish. I thought Montgomery carried the film with his light comedic touch and I never admired his skill more than here where he had so little to bounce off of. Sorry but Bette needed to stay in her comfort zone with films like The Letter and Now Voyager.

I've seen many 1930s and 40s movies on TCM featuring BD and JC and found them both desirable in their own ways.

Had I been around back then and known them I would have no problem being with either any place they wished to go.
