I misremembered the ending

I saw this film when it first appeared, then again this evening, an interval of 59 years. I had remembered a different ending, in which Sgt Fothergill's leg gets trapped when the points change during the marshalling yard chase. Swann could have got away from him but returns to save him from an oncoming train and is captured.

Assuming no such version ever existed, can anyone suggest another movie with which I confused it over the decades?
