The lack of music

...is what makes this one unique. It's very rare for films of the 40's and give this one an unvarnished, down-to-earth feeling.

I love the lack of music but I also couldn't stand that style of radio-play narration prevalent in the late 40s.

Hmm... guess I was so engrossed in the film that I didn't even notice the absence of music. But yes, I definitely agree about the film's overall uniqueness.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I actually loved the music in this film and was looking up the composer.
Agree though, that it's very effective and one of the strengths of this movie that the score is sparsely used compared to most other 40s Hollywood films. And that there isn't a score in many places you would usually expect one to be.
