How did Republic Pictures manage to obtain 'Force of Evil'?

If this is one of those Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer productions, shouldn't it be owned by
Warners by now? As for the 1947 boxing pic "Body and Soul" (also starring Garfield),
Shouldn't MGM own the rights since this is an United Artist release?

There are many films that Warners, RKO, U/A & MGM lost the rights to. Some films fell to Public Domain or legal battles and were obtained by other film companies. For example two Jimmy Stewart films--"Rope" (a Warner film) was obtained by Universal, "It's a Wonderful Life" (an RKO film) has been distributed by Universal, Republic and Paramount! There are MANY other films as well. Now that Paramount/VIACOM does the distribution for Republic as it purchased that company a few years back, you will see the Paramount logos also. Furthermore just because a studio "loses" a film does not mean they lose all TV rights or Theatrical distribution, they can and sometimes do retain certain rights. It is all quite baffling, and the legalities are confounding. I hope this helps somewhat.
