How did it happen? (spoiler)

Exactly how did Mrs. Baines fall? When I saw it happen, it seemed that the window had swung open and knocked her off when she put her weight on it. But then later on when I found out the window was to the room where Julie had been, I began wondering if maybe Julie had actually pushed the window open to knock Mrs. Baines down.

reply

Nope. The window that swung open faced onto a corridor from which the containing Julie was hiding.

The window doesn't connect to the room itself, but to the balcony/rooftop that stretches along the side of the house. Mrs. Baines (and earlier, Philippe) could look into the French windows of the guest room from there; but it pivots on a horizontal axis, such that pushing on the top makes the bottom flip up...thus knocking her from the narrow ledge on which she stood.

I thought it a little contrived that she would pound on an obviously unstable window like that. She wasn't that blinded by rage.
