Enchantment or Wuthering Heights

I think the two stories compliment each other perfectly. They also give the other genders perspective in two stories that are amazingly similar. I just saw Enchantment on TCM this weekend and was drawn because it has what has become completely forgotten in modern filmakng and that is a charming, engaging intro. Just think how un-enchanting Frankenstein or Beauty and the Beast would have been without those great intros. Anyway when first seeing Lark I immediately thought Heathcliff and Selina as Hindley. But where Wuthering is a fantastic melodrama/cautionary revenge tale Enchantment is more mature and realistic in its portrayals There are no grand heroes or villians. Selina deeply cares for her brothers despite her shrewishness and just maybe resents Lark and her own father because she has to play mother without the audience ever having been shown her own matron. Its difficult not to have too much sympathy for this devil because Jayne Meadows truly kicked butt in the role making this secondary character the most interesting character in the film. The house and the love story elements have a great realism that makes the karmic synchronicity all the more plausible. Absolutely one of the most pleasant viewing experiences of my 29 years.

I entirely agree!! I noticed the similarities between the two right away, not a complete take on WH but almost so where the roles are reversed into opposite sexes.

Lark is like Heathcliff, Rollo is like Cathy, Selina is like Hindley.
WH is a tortured, tormented romance where Enchantment is an endearing one.

I really don't get how they are alike at all. Well, I guess I can see how the family dynamics are the same...Father brings home waif to be raised as one of his own, one sibling falls in love with waif, the other resents waif, and becomes head of household...but the temperaments of Lark and Rollo are just so different, I never would have thought of it if you hadn't pointed it out. Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite movies.
