Could anyone explain the ending to me?

Could anyone explain the ending to me? Was it a policeman who made Don leave Hannah's door? Was it true about the auditioning and Don not being too bothered or was Peter Lawson's character just trying to get them back together?
Sorry to be dim, but this has troubled me for ages!!

(1) The guy who made Don leave was hotel security (aka in the trade the "house dick"). It's one of those signs that the world has changed (especially the world as portrayed in movies) that there might have been a time when a gentleman dressed in formal wear and talking quietly through a hotel room door would be escorted out of the building for bad behavior, even without any complaints from a guest.

(2) Yes, I think we are to assume that Peter LawFORD's character was a bit of a roue, but essentially a good guy who (having spent the night over with Don and learned of what happened) decides to do something to help his two friends get over their fight and get back together. I don't think there were any actual auditions -- (especially given that it was Easter Sunday) but that he just made that up to get Garland's character to act.

Irrelevant barely related trivia: Peter Lawford, in case you didn't know, was married to one of the Kennedy daughters and was therefore President Kennedy's (and Bobby Kennedy's and Ted Kennedy's) brother-in-law and therefore also uncle (and uncle-in-law) to Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
