Judy seems so awkward

Judy is really awkward and somewhat twitchy in this movie. I wonder if her drug use was already raging at this point.

I don't see that. Her character was suppose to be a little jittery and unsure of herself. What you're seeing is acting, I think.

reply

I agree, wonderful, pure acting. Garland was amazing in this movie!

reply

I agree. She never let her personal troubles show in her acting. Her husband and father of her first daughter, Vincent Minelli, was gay and they were coming to terms with a slowly dissolving marriage. Nonetheless, I saw none of this in her performance.

She has some lovely moments. But she is thin and drawn--and only about 25, I think! The really nervous edge was coming into her performing.

Still, this has two of my favorite Garland ballads--"It Only Happens When I Dance With You" and "Better Luck Next Time." (although in the latter number she doesn't look simply sad, she looks like she's just been told her entire family was wiped out.)

Don Hewes, and their professional partnership, is her entire life. She thinks he's going back to Nadine, and everything's come crashing down. It's the same as her entire family being wiped out.

reply

No, her nerves really were frayed during this period of time. She was having marriage troubles with Vincente, and either before this film or after she had to spend time in a sanatorium.
