Man, college professors used to make a helluva lot more than they do now

To be able to afford a place in town, and a swanky place in "The Lake District" with servants and whatnot? Yikes! These people were LOADED! And they just worked at a college!

I don't think that's an accurate assumption. As you may know, a lot of college professors are also published authors. Dr. Collins mentioned he wanted to do some work. It may or may not have been true but according to what he told Walker, he was going to review a book. It may have been for his class or for another job.

We did not know Dr. Collins' background either. It's possible he and/or his wife came from or inherited wealth, even the home in which they were held hostage. Besides, it's never really about what one earns as much as it's about what one spends.

It is a lot harder to save and invest money when you don't make a lot of money but if you can keep expenses down and use your disposable income to save and invest wisely you can afford a lot of things. On the flip side, you can earn a lot of money yet still live paycheck to paycheck and never seem to be able to keep your head above water.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

This is completely true, but this is also completely irrelevant, especially when Collins is spending it like it's going out of style on lake houses and servants.

As for your other point, again, you're right, we are given no information about his money. But the same is true for the 1948 audience watching this movie, and they would have had the same unanswered question that I did - where is this guy getting all of this money? UNLESS college professors did make more money back then, in which case it is not an unanswered question, see what I mean?

Maybe he was in private practice, too.

I think it's just Hollywood. I've noticed in a lot of old movies, even the most minor white collar worker had a maid. I don''t think that was the reality of the times, just Hollywood.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

I wonder how much he's making as a police psychiatrist? He takes the bus to work in the morning, but did they have to give up the lake house, does his wife have to look after the kid herself?
