Was the hair a wig? Was it really died green? Did Dean have to shave his head for the roll?

On the TCM website it says he wore wigs because they were afraid Dean would be a target of ridicule if they dyed it. In some scenes it looks like real hair, in other it is obviously a wig (at least it's obvious to me)...
shareI also read he went through hell because the glue used on the wigs irritated his scalp and caused unbearable itching.
shareI saw this last week on TCM, and wondered also. When he was getting his hair shaved I really thought he had dyed it because it looked like there was dye stain on his scalp in some areas after the head was shaved.

I thought it was a wig. Then in diffearnt parts looks differant like wig then might be real hair.
