Things I learned about Babe Ruth from watching this movie.

1.) The Bambino loved to drink milk in a bar.

2.) He rushed a cur to the hospital that was hit by a ball during practice.

3.) Babe had healing powers that rivaled Jebus (check out the scene where he gives a ball to a crippled kid).

4.) He's a big kid at heart.

I recently read a a bio on Babe Ruth called "The Big Bam" by Leigh Montville. Any resemblance to the real Babe Ruth and to the character played by William Bendix in this movie is purely coincidental...except for a few things.

They were both "childlike" in their behaviour. The real Babe Ruth loved to eat, drink and womanize, (even when he was married). His career would have ended earlier except for a personal trainer who took him under his wing and forced him to "shape up" somewhat when his late night carousing started to get the best of him.

His second wife Claire was also instrumental in saving his career by treating him more like her child than her spouse. She controlled the purse strings and allowed him only so much money to carry around so that it wouldn't all be wasted on frivolous spending and outrageous tips.
