A TRENCH FOR BERGMAN?

I heard that because Ingrid Bergman was so tall, and Charles Boyer so short, they had to dig a pit for her whenver she did scenes with him (or she had to be seated, wearing flats or whatever).

He must have been pretty vain about his height. Do you think she felt awkward cos' I've heard a few actors she worked with used blocks etc cos of her height?

Not likely. They were both 5 foot 9. She probably did wear flats and he lifts so that he'd appear taller than her, but it seems unlikely that he had to stand on a box or she in a trench.

It's the old story that still obtains -- Tall women still want their seven-inch heels, therefore demanding a man of at least 6ft-6.

Someone on the commentary of 'Gaslight' (1944) says that Bergman did have to do that when they first appeared together in that movie. And that their laughter over this broke the ice between them.
