Lost in translation

One of the few critiques on this movie points out the names that the father calls his daughter as racist and unsettling. I think this is a problem with translation and culture. In Mexican culture it is quite common to call people names based on their traits, and whether it is an insult or a compliment depends on tone and context. People in Mexico are, for the great most part, mixed-race. So the fact that one has dark skin, white skin, etc. becomes just a plain physical trait. I just want to point that out for non-Mexicans to consider before watching the movie. These are names that even now my dad calls me and are not considered offensive at all.
