Abbot and Costello Meet The Killer

did anyone find that Abbot and Costello Meet The Killer was funnier cause it had more jokes and it and the plot and the way it was done was much funnier?

reply

No, I thought it was kind of dull. And it wasn't really a monster film, I would compare it more to Who Done It?. It had some good moments and Karloff is always great, but I don't think there's any comparison between it and A & C Meet Frankenstien.

Dear Fritzfassbender,
You are sooo right about Abbott And Costello Meet The Killer,Boris Karloff.
What a shame how under used Boris Karloff was in this film and rather misused as well.

Karloff hardly appears in the film at all. Wasn't his part originally written as a woman?

Dear Porfle,
Yes it was and if you know that then you probably know that this script was originally written as a comedy for Bob Hope.
I recall it's original title was "Easy Does It".

It`s too bad Karloff was to old to play Frankenstein in A/C Meet Frankenstein.

Glenn Strange did a good job as Frankenstein though.

Karloff quit playing the Monster nine years earlier, after 1939's SON OF FRANKENSTEIN, because he felt that nothing more of interest could be done with the character. There's no way he would've played him in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN regardless of his age.

I have to be honest: I am glad Karloff didn't do this movie. It was a fun movie, and I love the boys. There's one thing punching the Wolfman in the face, but mocking Karloff's Monster would have been tragic! JMO....

I personally liked Meet the Killer a bit more. Honestly, I'm a huge fan of the boys, but Frankenstein never really turned my gears as much as some of their other movies. The jokes were tired jokes that I'd seen many times before, and they were executed better in other films, i.e, the moving candle bit was better in Hold that Ghost.

And yah, Karloff's character was underused, probably due to the fact that a woman was supposed to play the swami role that he played, as someone mentioned.

Other than that, I think this is by far the darkest of their films, and has the most suspenseful feel of all their movies. Basically, decent plot for a whodunit, good joke delivery (albeit more seldom than usual) and a poor title, sadly. Of course, it was just a way to billboard Karloff's name and put a$ses in the seats.

Of all the "Meet the" movies, here's my ranking, 1 being my favorite:

6. Meet Keystone Kops
5. Meet Jeckyll and Hyde (also with Karloff)
4. Meet the Mummy
3. Meet the Invisible man
2. Meet Frankenstein
1. Meet the Killer

And sadly, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Meet Captain Kidd. I've looked for it since I was a kid.

It just now occurred to me just how many A&C movies I should still see. Might have to give this one a look.

Well, the murder mystery in Killer is interesting, although it seems to me they have the Inspector knowing something that hasn't been told to us earlier. Maybe something was cut?

reply

No. I liked this a lot more than The Killer. Costello was unbearable in that one. At least here he was tolerable and I thought the comedy here was better, not to mention I liked the horror and comedy mix.

They're both hilarious but Meet the Killer has ALWAYS been my favorite, I was about 11 when I first saw it and at the time it was THE craziest thing I'd ever seen and I loved it. I loved the whole bodies jumping from room to room on Costello, and the whole sleepwalking bit, and just everything about it it was all so hysterical.
