Why don't you like the last 10 minutes, if you don't mind me asking? I've always been a huge fan of this movie, I just bought it on DVD at Target, and I think the ending is perfect for the storyline.

Do you think its too sappy or too much of a Hollywood happy ending? Just curious.

Yea I'm a little confused by this criticism.

Funny, I watched it for the first time last night and had the same feeling.
You get a gritty western , with hard men leading a hard journey. Then it ends with all that silly buddy buddy , name calling nonsense. It started out as a non typical Wayne western, but ended like a typical Wayne western. But I guess some people like those. Having said that , it is still a great movie, probably one of the better ones I've seen with John Wayne in it.
btw , I found it rather ironic how Pedro ended his life, kind of foreshadowing.

Red River had the same kind of turn at the end and has received much criticism for it.

The ending had to be light after the tragedy that had happened before. It balances out I think.
Still, in my top ten westerns of all time.

I always liked the ending to 3 Godfathers... it seemed a balanced conclusion to the story line and the personalities of the characters.
On the other hand... I never liked the ending to Red River. It never seemed to ring true and had a forced feeling. Not so much that they were able to renew their relationship, but the injection of the woman into the fight just seemed out of left field.

I read the novel RED RIER was based on, and the movie ending was indeed different from the book ending.

The ending is about redemption, a strong christian theme.

The men are thieves, though not men without conscience. They are given a chance to redeem themselves by saving the baby.

Not all John Wayne movies have happy endings. Watch Sands of Iwo Jima, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist to name a few.

While a different ending may have been more poignant, the ending as it is shows the power of true redemption. It saves you from a life of petty existence, and convinces those you've wronged to befriend and forgive you.

While I liked this movie, one of John Ford's greatest weaknesses was enforcing comedy or funny moments. The name calling we saw at the end, or the stereotypical drunk, so abundant in many of Ford's pictures (which thankfully, this movie did not have until the very end at the cantana).

There are funny bits in this film, like putting the grease on the baby, but those moments came off much more natural and never seemed forced, like "the making fun of the names" we witnessed at the end of the movie.

They had water from the cactus, though not much. Enough to keep going...maybe just enough to reach the town.
