awful ending

This version of the movie suffers from the casting of heroic John Wayne in the lead role. The "Hollywood Ending" destroys what otherwise would have been a decent remake of the excellent earlier version.

I disagree...though this film may have a happier ending compared to the darker 1936 version, I wouldn't say that it has an "awful" ending and I personally found the film to be better than "decent."

While it's true that Wayne got to display his usual heroics, I would point to this movie to show that he was capable of pushing his boundaries. Though he prevails in the end, you get to see Wayne as both a bank robber and a man in despair as he walks through the desert.

People who complain about "Hollywood endings" usually haven't really seen all that many Hollywood movies. Hollywood has produced some of the bleakest and most downbeat movies ever made.
