Meh
Dull film, even with the great Robert Ryan. Joan Bennett looks terrific though, but the plot and script is predestrian.

Don't you think that if RKO hadn't insisted on Jean Renoir to cut the film to shreds so as to appease Americans' sense of "purity" that it could have been a much better film?
Personally I found it to be intriguing enough to merit a soft 7/10, but I have a feeling that if the original version from Renoir may have helped to make it a much more interesting proposition all around.
It was goofy. First he's trying to drown the guy, then he's trying to save him from a fire. Just another moldy melodrama.
shareThere were some obvious edits or omissions, especially in regards to what takes place at the hollowed out shell of the ship on the beach and the ending feels abrupt but overall I enjoyed the movie. A bit choppy maybe but not bad.
