quotes

Wish I could find this / see it again. I remember some great quotes:

I like matches -- you never have to refill them, and when you're done with them you simply throw them away.

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all.

We missed you while you were dead.

Come on over at nine -- I'll give you some poisoned coffee.

What's wrong with the lights?
Nothing. You're going blind.

Audrey Totter & Constance Bennett had lots of great lines.\

"...with my grandchildren at my bedside, if I can find a grandfather for them."

"Who painted it?" "My husband did, in his sober period. Before he married me..."

"She drank too much milk and her seams were always straight...Frankly she bored me."

reply

"You know Press, I rather enjoy playing God."

"Hatchet murdrer."
"Tiny little thing, wasn't she?"
"Well there's only half of her there."

"I don't like your program, it frightens me."
"Do you like your job?"
"I like my job."

"Do me a favor. Take that pianist out and have him shot."

"Oh really, an idea of your own?"

"You know, I don't believe a word that young man said."
"It sounded too much like the truth to be true."

reply

Hurd Hatfield and Constance Bennett:
Oliver: I'm counting my sins.
Jane: Without an adding machine?

"You look as if you've been fished out of several oceans..."
In the same scene, Joan Caulfield says she needs some time to pull herself together, whereupon Audrey Totter retorts, "It's going to be a long pull."

Another good one indeed; that scene was one of the 'catiest' scenes you'll ever see. Totter needs to be bitch-slapped...but she seems like the type that would love it!

reply

Another scene loaded with lines is the scene in the guest house with Totter, North and Rains.
When they are playing chess and she pops out the super obvious come on "Does it always take you so long to make a move?" Classic! A tramp and proud of it!

“If you ask me Althea should be taken out regularly and beaten; like a rug.”

“Your thinking is untidy, like most so-called thinking today.” (Murder, My Sweet)

reply

The quote "thus conscience doth make cowards of us all" is from Hamlet and should be credited to Shakespeare, not the screenwriter, wonderful script tho' it is.

reply

I'm not quoting exactly, but I always laugh at Constance's line as she first sees the guests at the birthday party, "Look at them. A cork pops for free, and they swarm like locusts!"

I'm a CB fan, always, but she is particularly great fun in this film.

tag65; Althea as a critical description of Matilda...'She drinks to much milk and her seams are always straight'. With Milk now called into question for its health benefits after a young age why would a Adult drink it? As for 'seams' unless for climatic, cosmetic or decorative purpose Woman do not wear hose and the importance of straight seams have little importance. To bad though a Woman with a B.T.K. dress/skirt and seamed hose is very sexy.

reply

Well, in 1947, it wasn't called into question.

Also, fashions were somewhat different 65+ years ago.

reply

slinter; Assume you are referring to the milk.
