This is coming on TCM in July. If you go to their websight you can request an e-mail reminder. I can not wait.

THE UNFINISHED DANCE is an oft overlooked, freakish morality play set in a bratty girls' ballet school, a sentimental stinker that really NEEDS to be on DVD (and, since we got Shirley Temple's tawdry THE BLUE BIRD recently, can a film like THE UNFINISHED DANCE be far behind???). Danny Thomas pours on the pathos as usual (read: way too heavy), Margaret O"Brien is spot-on as a good little actress should be, and luscious, leggy Cyd Charisse is suitably glamorous (until "the accident" of course). The whole shmear scared the bejesus out of me as a child but at the same time was fascinating for all the "wrong" reasons -- i.e., this film is bound to appeal to a very gay audience. Imagine it paired with THE BAD SEED. Hehehehe...

Buckets of melodramatic audacity abound in THE UNFINISHED DANCE, and it deserves its place on DVD.

How about it studios?????

PS: Update: July 15 07 -- A friend taped it for me off of TCM when it aired recently; I just watched it and it's just as tawdry and nightmarish as I remembered from childhood. Why is this not on DVD?!?!?!

I just saw this for the first time the other day. I love the costumes and would like to recreate them. Does anyone know what became of them or where there are prints of them? Karen Booth as Dorina was just gorgeous. I can't find any pics of her though. Can anyone help? Thanks, Feli.

Ummm...okay, I'm not getting the whole "gay audience" connection (but then I'm a straight female LOL). However, I do agree with everything else you said! I LOVE this movie, but haven't seen it in about 20 years. I well remember Margaret's horror and guilt for having caused Cyd Charisse's accident. Outstanding movie, with all of the high drama you expect from a Margaret O'Brien film.

reply

It's Karen Booth's character that has the accident not Cyd Chariss's. Margaret O'Brien did it (on accident) because she idolized Cyd's character who was feeling upstaged.

hanging to for DVD release.
after having seen Cyd Charisse in "On an Island with You" (Esther Williams collection) and Ann Codee in Bathing Beauty.
plot doesn't matter. Just want to see another ballerina movie. And compare the contemporary Powell & Pressburger's Red Shoes and Tales of Hoffman (Leonide Massine choregraphy ).
