TCM gives this only 2 stars

On its onscreen guide there are only 2 stars, I would give it 3 of the art direction and photography alone!

Leonard Maltin's Guide gives it 2 and a half stars. I would (also) give it three stars. The shots of Los Angeles were amazing, especially the one of the victim's wife entering the trolley at Angels Flight.

I loved the brief Angel's Flight scene. I was raised about 25 miles outside of L.A. and as a child took occasional trips with my mother to L.A...each time, a ride on Angel's Flight was part of the trip.

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

It's not TCM. It's whoever supplies guide information to your cable operator (could be Tribune, Rovi, etc...). You can tell this because if a film is on two different channels, the description is almost always identical. Incidentally, it was two stars on my cable system as well (Armstrong Cable). Based on imdb rating alone, it's currently 6.8 which usually does equate to 3 stars.

You are correct about who supplies the star ratings on cable system channel guides. My Time Warner cable guide uses Gracenote, Inc. - now part of Tribune Media. It also gives this film only two stars, and I would also give it three.

I agree with you. In addition, I thought that John Hoyt and Steven Geray were terrific in support. Scott is better in sinister roles.
