Eve Arden

Eve Arden never better as the sharp tongued, gossipy matron who surprises everyone by showing compassion for both Ann Sheridan and Zachary Scott at the end of the movie.
I love Maz Steiner's theme.
As for the sculpture of Ann Sheridan, like the Maltese Falcon, one wonders if it still exists - what a treasure.
A great part for Ann Sheridan. A dvd release would be excellent.

Eve is the BEST at delivering sharp lines - "poor Joan, she's not smart enough to be an idiot" i laugh out loud everytime isee this movie at that line!

Eve Arden steals the picture . . . . proving once again that categories like "leading actor" vs. "supporting actor" are just constructs of our minds, not features of reality.

reply

I quite agree with all of you. Her speech near the end seemed written especially for her.

reply

Arden is very good, but she does not "steal the picture".

So proud we graduated from the same high school, in Mill Valley, CA. (A nostalgia Facebook page for our town regularly includes posts about her.)

reply

Where is Mill Valley located? Wasn't Eve in Mildred Pierce?

reply

Mill Valley is over the Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. I spent the millennium New Year in Mill Valley. Good times.

Eve Arden defined what it is to be type cast. She virtually always played the sharp tongued best friend. She played it well, including an Oscar nomination as Joan Crawford's BFF in "Mildred Pierce", but I would have loved to see her handle something else as she was a fine actress.

You know you are in for a treat when you see her name listed in the cast. The more Eve Arden type names the more you go "Oh Boy, this should be good." She was great in this movie.

reply

I feel exactly that way whenever I see her name listed in a film's credits... Same with Thelma Ritter. I always know there's going to be something good coming up!

reply

eve was great.

By 1947, studio writers probably knew when they were writing for Eve Arden - or an Eve Arden type.
